Welcome Letter

We made it to the last day of school. So, what would you say to a new third grader coming to Mr. R’s room in September? Write a welcome letter of what to expect in third grade.

Inquiry Journal for Four Dollars and Cents by Eric Kimmel

 This is a humorous story set n the Old West. Shorty Long is a cowboy who everybody money. One day Widow Macrea, who runs the Silver Dollar Cafe, decides she’s tired of shorty not paying his bills. Shorty owes her four dollars and fifty cents, and she wants him to pay up. When Widow Macrea goes to the ranch where Shorty works, Shorty pretends to be dead, he has to be buried. Widow Macrea takes Shorty’s body to Boot Hill, where dead cowboys are buried. That’s when the outlaw, Big Nose George Parrot, and some of his gang come along and Shorty’s troubles multiply.

Probability in 3rd Grade

We have been studying probability for the last week. We learned about events. Our Math Coach came in and did two lessons. We learned about probability by doing a coin toss. We know that there are two possible outcomes in a coin toss; heads or tails. We recorded our data on a T chart using tally marks. We also did a survey on choosing a favorite number (1,2,3, or 4). At first we only surveyed our classmates. For homework we asked our family and friends. Once we collected the data we recorded and represented the data using a horizontal bar graph. Mr. R followed up on this lesson by having us survey other third grade classrooms, it was Mrs. Carillo’s Idea – our Math Coach Here are the  results;

Money Money Money

We are learning all about money. We have read stories about money. This past week we read; Alexander who Used to be Rich Last Sunday by Judith Voirst. Poor Alexander lost all his money. Check out this video about another boy who lost his dollar also;
